You want to try a pair of mid-tier bone-conduction headphones and bring AI to your ears

The review

AI this, AI that—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by AI-integrated products that promise more than they deliver. But AI translation earbuds are one of the few categories where the tech has a clear, practical use—especially for travel, meetings, and multilingual conversations.

That’s why I was genuinely curious about the iFLYTEK AI Translation Earbuds. These open-ear, bone-conduction Bluetooth earbuds pair with a companion app to deliver real-time language translation, AI voice assistance, and solid call performance—all in a single wearable. These aren’t launching until next week, but I got my hands on a pair for an early lookAfter spending a few days with them, here’s how they actually perform in everyday use.

What makes these AI translation earbuds different from typical Bluetooth earbuds?

The explanation is right in the name: The iFLYTEK AI Translation Earbuds are here to process language input and translate it to a different language. That’s their name, and that’s their prime focus.  Did they actually work? The short-answer is yes, while the longer answer involves a few caveats.

Like most real-time translation earbuds, accuracy improves dramatically in controlled, face-to-face conversations rather than media playback. To be transparent, I don’t have anyone in my direct circle right now that can wear one of the earbuds and use them in a direct foreign-language conversation (which is one of the key selling points for these earbuds). I approximated this by playing some foreign films and YouTube videos and putting one earbud right near the speaker. When the earbud picked up the sound, it seemed to translate it well, but I think it would work better when placed on another person’s ear.

The other translation features feel a little tacked-on, to be honest. There are some immersive modes using the Bavvo app (which the quick start guide prompts you to download). These modes bring up a text-based interface that uses sound input from the earbuds to translate audio. Or you could just import a video. These all work, but require you to use the app directly, rather than listening to the earbuds for translation. But the 60-language translation library is impressive, and certainly better than the lower-priced Amazon knockoffs out there.

AI functionality is interesting, but not novel

Beyond the translation component, there’s also a generative AI component. Using a quick 3-second hold, you can bring up the dedicated AI assistant to ask questions. In my experience, it works more like a ChatGPT than Siri, so it’s very comfortable giving you a lot of information when you ask a question. It’s unclear which AI model the iFLYTEK AI Translation Earbuds are using, but it was serviceable.

To be fair, this is mostly interesting to me because it gives me a way to call up a truly smart LLM when on the go, which would be great if I was walking around and wanted some quick internet information. But at the end of the day, the earbuds just serve as controllers to an LLM, so if you’re already using a ChatGPT-style app on your phone, this may not be that exciting.

Sound quality

Now that the AI functionality is out of the way, I can get a bit more into the other stuff—the other expected features and performance of a pair of Bluetooth earbuds. In short, the sound on these is decent, but not great. If you’ve ever used bone conduction headphones, you know that you often sacrifice some bass and fullness, with an emphasis on mids. That was very apparent here, even just after a couple hours of listening to some of my test albums (mostly Indie Rock and Top 40 to get a good range of styles).

To be fair, I don’t think these earbuds sound bad. I need to spend some more time with them and use them in multiple scenarios to get a more thorough accounting . The open-style design means that you aren’t getting any isolation, which is actually great if you want to use these for phone calls. While they didn’t quite make my list of the best Bluetooth earbuds for iPhone calls, they did serve nicely for the few office calls I made. The Bavvo translation app also has a mode for translating video calls, so this could be great if that fits into your use. Overall, these will serve nicely if phone calls are your first priority, and music is just an added use.

Design, build, and feel

I was surprised to find that the iFLYTEK AI Translation Earbuds really stood out in the build-quality category. The (admittedly large) battery charging case and the strong, polished materials make these earbuds feel as premium as other non-translation buds in the space (such as the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2, that I reviewed recently). It’s good that they’re premium, because the price tag certainly matches.

But once you’ve made the investment, you’ll feel pretty satisfied with it. I like the way that they sit tight-but-not-too-tight on my ear, meaning they feel great for long listening sessions, but would also stay on during a jog or other workout. The wave-like swoop that the main chassis points down toward your mouth when wearing them hearkens back to the days of single-ear Bluetooth headsets, but in a subtle, nostalgic way. It also serves to make them really serviceable at picking up your voice—merging form and function in an interesting way. Overall, the feel and design checked the box nicely for me

Value and price

According to some early reports out of CES, the iFLYTEK AI Translation Buds are going to launch (in just a few days) at around the $350 price point. That’s admittedly pricey, even in the premium earbud space. That’s not all that surprising to me, considering iFLYTEK’s eINK tablets (which are very well-loved by reviewers) sit at a premium price point too. I’m not sure I’d call these a “great value,” but if you need a lot of AI functionality and translation, I’d say it’s worth the price—especially if you travel a lot and already use some of iFLYTEK’s other AI devices.

Do AI translation earbuds actually work?

In controlled environments, yes—especially for short, conversational phrases. Background noise, accents, and speaker distance still matter, but the experience is far better than early translation earbuds from a few years ago.
